MA Rakuzin (1923) and a number of other researchers at the dawn of the development of petroleum chemistry drew attention to the role of cholesterol in the optical activity of petroleum products. They pointed out that the substances that determine the optical activity of petroleum products are most likely cholesterol and some of its cleavage products contained in heavy petroleum fractions.

A. Krasuski (1935) first expressed the idea of the presence of sterols in a naphthenic petroleum. Further investigations of KA Krasuskii showed that naphthenic petroleum contains sterols or compounds close to them that undergo a change during distillation.

It is known that some bituminous substances, like peat, coal, some curative mud, as well as petroleum, contain estrogenic substances. Analyzing the medicinal properties of naphthenic petroleum, some authors also suggested the presence of these compounds, a substance with the biological properties of follicular hormone (VM Solov'ev, LM Keilis, 1939; AA Geodakov, 1939). This assumption was confirmed in the experiment when changes took place in the uterus of rabbits subjected to repeated lubrication with naphthenic petroleum, which can be caused by substances with the biological properties of the follicular hormone (AA Geodakov, 1939). An even more striking confirmation is the fact that under the influence of naphthene procedures, the content of the lactation hormone in the milk of primiparous women increases (A, I. Karaev, AA Geo¬dakov, 1941). According to the data of RA Leibzon (1939), in castrated white mice after rubbing of naphthenic petroleum on skin integuments, characteristic features of estrus took place. According to the author, estrogenic substances are easily absorbed through the surface of intact skin.

The suggestion of Yu. G. Mamedaliev (1953) that one of the main acting principles of naphthenic petroleum is polycyclic naphthenic hydrocarbons - derivatives of cyclopentanoperhydrophenanthrene (CPPF), has been confirmed in the work of many researchers.

Yu. G. Mamedaliev (1953) and TG Pashayev (1959) note that a peculiar quadruple system of naphthenic hydrocarbons, which could be designated as cyclopentapoerperphenylate, is found in such vital substances as sterols, bile acids, a number of genital hormones, vitamin "D" and others. This indicates an important biological effect of polycyclic naphthenic hydrocarbons.
