1. On the active principles of naphthenic petroleum

has a very complex, until now finally uncovered chemical composition. Of the constituents of naphthenic petroleum, its active principles are primarily attracted by the attention of naphthenic hydrocarbons.

VV Markovnikov, who first discovered cyclic saturated hydrocarbons in the composition of a naphthenic petroleum, named them naphthenic.

Like all petroleum, naftalan is naphthenic oil (it contains 57% of naphthenic hydrocarbons). In this oil there is a significant admixture of aromatic hydrocarbons, including benzene derivatives.

Naphthenic hydrocarbons of naphthenic oil (mainly polycyclic) are not significantly different from naphthenic hydrocarbons of other oils, and aromatic hydrocarbons of naphthenic petroleum have a slight difference from them (Sh. M. Hasanov, 1945). Naphthenic hydrocarbons, as active principles of naphthenic petroleum, began to attract special attention after the presence of a cyclopentanoperhydrophenotrene (SPLP) skeleton in the composition of cholesterol, ergosterol, stigmasterol, cholic acid, folliculin, yellow body hormones, androsterone, testosterone and other physiologically active substances. Among some of these physiologically active substances, attention is drawn to cholesterol, which, according to ND Zelinsky, is the mother substance of petroleum. He assumed that cholesterol is not only a natural admixture of petrolem in the process of petroleum formation, but under suitable decomposition conditions it can serve as the starting material of all hydrocarbons characteristic of natural petroleum. He even succeeded in thermally decomposing cholesterol in the presence of aluminum chloride to obtain a complex mixture resembling natural petroleum.
